The Nomination of the Honorable David F. Bauman, P.J.S.C. to the New Jersey Supreme Court

Letter to Governor Chris Christie, 1/7/2014

Dear Governor Christie:

We write to express our frustration and disappointment with the Senate Judiciary Committee’s failure to afford New Jersey Supreme Court nominee, the Honorable David F. Bauman, P.J.S.C., a fair and swift hearing on his nomination. For more than a year now, APALA-NJ and New Jersey’s Asian Pacific American community, which represents approximately 8.8% of New Jersey’s total population, have been patiently waiting for our elected officials to set politics aside and do the right thing. It is now quite apparent, however, that Judge Bauman will unfairly not be granted a hearing before his nomination expires on January 14, 2014. This is an outrage.

Press Release 10/14/2013

To the Editor:

The Supreme Court of New Jersey is not a political battlefield.

On December 10, 2012, Governor Chris Christie nominated Monmouth County Superior Court Presiding Judge David F. Bauman to the State Supreme Court, along with Board of Public Utilities President Robert M. Hanna. For nearly a year, Judge Bauman and Mr. Hanna have been patiently waiting for State Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on their nominations. Yet, within only two months of his recent nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court on August 12, 2013, a hearing is scheduled for October 17, 2013 for Camden County Superior Court Judge Faustino J. Fernandez-Vina. This unfair and inexcusable delay of hearings for Judge Bauman and Mr. Hanna stems from the standoff between Senate Democrats and Governor Christie over the composition of the State’s highest court.

Letter to APALA-NJ Members 3/18/13

Dear APALA-NJ Fellow Member:

On behalf of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey (APALA-NJ), we write to request your help with a matter of great importance to our community.

As you may already know, the Honorable David F. Bauman, P.J.S.C., of Monmouth County was nominated by Governor Chris Christie to serve as an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Judge Bauman is an exceptionally qualified and accomplished individual. Moreover, his appointment will serve to provide much needed diversity to our highest court. If successful, Judge Bauman would become the first Asian Pacific American to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court.

As a fellow APALA-NJ member, we know that you recognize the importance of doing all we can to help such a qualified candidate ascend to our State’s highest court.

While we are actively working to advance Judge Bauman’s nomination on an organizational level, you can aid our efforts by calling your local State Senator as a concerned constituent to voice your support. A list of the NJ State Senators in the Senate Judiciary Committee along with their contact information is attached. We are also enclosing a copy of APALA-NJ’s endorsement letter so that you are able to highlight Judge Bauman’s qualifications during your call.

Please let us know if you called your local State Senator’s office, with whom you spoke, and how your call was generally received.

If you have any questions about how you can help or of the nomination process, please do not hesitate to contact APALA-NJ’s JPAC co-chairs: Theodore K. Cheng - tchengesq@yahoo.com; Rachit J. Choksi - rachit.choksi@gmail.com; or Jhanice V. Domingo - jhanicedomingo@gmail.com.

We hope that you will support this team effort by calling your local State Senator’s office today to express your support for Judge Bauman’s nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely yours,

THE ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION OF NEW JERSEY
